46.Al Balad Theatre:
This theatre was established following a workshop on (developing alternative spaces) organized by the center in cooperation with the Young Arab Theatre Fund and the Al Fawanees theatre during the Amman International Theatre Festival in 2002. This workshop aimed at exploring ways in which existing spaces can be transformed into alternative spaces for the performing arts. This workshop was conducted by the Swedish expert Gert-Ova Waagstam and scenographer Tareq Abu El Futouh of the Young Arab Theatre Fund. Eleven young architects and cultural managers from Jordan participated in this workshop which selected Versaille cinema, one of the oldest cinema houses in Amman, as a model for the rehabilitation plan. The three partners in the project managed to implement the results of the workshop and Al Balad Theatre was founded under the direct management and supervision of Raed Asfour, director and scenograph. The Al Balad Theatre was opened on 17 February 2005 with the following objectives:

1.       Provide new performance spaces for various contemporary arts (theatre, dance, cinema, music, visual arts) to host Jordanian, Arab, and international artists.

2.       Develop the relationship with the community through the establishment of a multi-purpose cultural center.

3.       Provide spaces for rehearsals and workshops for young artists.

4.       Open new channels of communication and cooperation with various art organizations in the Arab world and abroad through the presentation of performances from different countries all year round.

5.       Provide a space for young artists to present their artistic work and experimentation in the field of theatre, dance, and music.

6.       Provide specialized programs for children.

7.       Organize festivals and events.

For over one year and a half the ATTC was the host organization for the theatre until it was founded as a non profit company in Jordan with a board consisting of 12 artists and business people and professionals from the Jordanian civil society.

The ATTC cooperated with the Arab Education Forum to organize the founding meeting for “Safar: Arab youth mobility fund”. The cooperation with the Arab Education Forum has been ongoing for several years on a variety of themes. This recent project that the Arab Education Forum is embarking on represents a milestone in our cooperation. The “Safar” fund aims to assist Arab youth who have their own community initiatives to travel within the Arab world and take part in apprenticeships, internships, training workshops, and meetings that will enhance their understanding of their work and develop cross-country interaction and dialogue between Arab youth. The founding meeting organized in July 2005 was the culmination of 5 months of e-mail exchanges and discussions on the project. The founding committee consisted of 25 young people from 8 different Arab countries, including Hussein Rifai from ATTC. The project was launched in October 2005 and the applications are currently online on the AEF website (www.almoultaqa.com) or the “ Safar “ website (www.safarfund.org).

Soukoun was created by the Lebanese Dance Research Association to develop scholarly dance research and contribute to the growth of the dance field in the Arabic speaking countries.

Soukoun website is conceived as well as a research tool as a mean of communication to respond to lacking needs related to dance research by:

  • Sharing specialized articles about dance written in different field ( philosophy, performing arts, sociology, anthropology)

  • Gathering in one space relevant and disseminated dance knowledge (articles, bibliographical references) that seems to be fundamental to the comprehension of dance as an artistic as well as a social practice.

  • carving an open space for practitioners (choreographers, dancers), pedagogues (teachers, trainers) and researchers to exchange their reflections and scholarly dance research and make it accessible on-line.
